Located in Umaria District of Madhya Pradesh, the Bandhavgarh National Park got the title of “National Park” in the year 1968 as it engrosses the area of around 105 sq. km. The park got its name by Lord Rama, who constructed Bandhavgarh Fort for his brother Lakshman. In Sanskrit, “Bandhavgarh” means “Brother’s Fort”. This is believed that Lord Rama made this fort to keep an eye on Lanka. The park houses a large biodiversity and the country’s largest population of tigers over there. You can also explore the large population of several species of deer and leopards as well. In the year 1951, the first ever white tiger was spotted by Maharaja of Rewa and named it – Mohan. The tiger is stuffed in the castle.

Thereafter, the son of Vyaghra Dev, Karan Dev tied a knot with the daughter of Raja of Ratanpur and she bought the dowry of Bandhogarh, which is known as Bandhavgarh. In the year 1597, the Mughals got the legendary Bandhavgarh Fort accidently. In addition, Bandhavgarh National Park also has a legendary history.
The forests of Bandhavgarh (sporting preserve) were the Shikargah of the Maharajas and their guests before becoming the national park. Rewa state merged with Madhya Pradesh in the year 1947 and Bandhavgarh National Park get into the regulation of Madhya Pradesh. No special measures had been taken until 1968 and Maharaja had hunting rights. Since then, the national park has been preserved by the government by taking various steps to declare the park as a safe, natural habitat.
Ideal time for visiting Bandhavgarh
From the month of November to June, you can spot a large number of tigers in the national park. Due to monsoons, the park stays closed for the public from 1st July to 30th September. And the best season is from November to March to visit Bandhavgarh. The peak monsoon days are perfect to visit the park i.e. from November to June. Various wild animals can be spotted from March to June including leopards and tigers. This is the best season for wildlife lovers to capture various amazing pictures.
How to reach?
The direct flights are available from Delhi, Agra and Varanasi to Khajuraho which is the closest airport, and drive time is around 7 to 8 hours to reach Bandhavgarh’s Tala Park. And the closest railway station is Umaria from where you can take quick 40-minute drive to the park. From Delhi, you can get the overnight journey to Umaria and reach this natural reserve.
