Bandhavgarh National Park: The Less-Known Facts

In 1968, Bandhavgarh National Park was established and it was further extended in the year 1986. Since then, it was further renamed as Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in the year 1993. The park is spread over the core area of over 437 sq. km (168 sq. miles or 44,884 hectares). This is the park where Maharajas of Rewa lived in Bandhavgarh Fort and first white tiger of the state was spotted by the king. When it was recognized as tiger reserve, the hunting was totally banned and it was, then, protected for shoots.

About the Park
Today, the national park has become the habitat of most endangered and rarer animals, including spotted deer (Cheetal), barking deer, sambar, black buck, nilgai, fore-horned antelope, chinkara, wild gaur (the largest species of wild oxen on planet), wild boar, sloth bear, leopard and last but not the least – the Royal Bengal Tiger. In addition the Bandhavgarh forest ranges and the park is also enriched with myriad bird-life. As the park remains closed during monsoon months from July to October, the best time to backpack Bandhavgarh is from November to March and May and June. It is best to avoid visiting the park just after monsoon because big cats are less likely to be seen due to long grass.

It houses partridges, hornbills, blossom beaded parakeets, golden orioles, falcons, golden eagle, sun birds and hawks. Hence, Bandhavgarh National Park is listed as one of the top five national parks in the country. Located at Vindhya Mountain Ranges that spread across the whole Central India, the national park is quite undulating. Along the edges of forest, most parts of the valley are covered by bamboo clumps and grasslands. In these meadows, photographers get rewarding opportunities to get most surprising thrill and adventure.

Bandhavgarh Fort
Lies on the plateau of Vindhya ranges, the ancient Bandhavgarh Fort dominates the park with its own history. Now, the outdated tanks and monuments of the fort are getting reclaimed by the wildlife and become the shelter of animals like black bucks.
